MMA in New York

Being a member of the American Sambo Association and big fans of MMA, we here at ECS completely support the initiative to make MMA legal in the state of New York. Coach Grant remembers all too well when Senator John McCain worked to temporarily ban mixed martial arts competitions in Arizona while he held the Arizona Shootfighting Championship Heavyweight Title back in the late 90's. Luckily, the ban was lifted shortly after it was instilled. Just like in Arizona back then, now in New York , the reasons appear to be more political than practical.

Check out this trailer for the feature film NEW YORK MMA. The film is produced by ASA President Stephen Koepfer and is a documentary about the plight to legalize MMA in the state of New York shown through the eyes of amateur fighter, Bradley Desir. Directed by Kahleem Poole-Tejada, NEW YORK MMA promises to be worth the time. See the NY MMA NOW blog for more details.

Team American Sambo Continues International Winning Streak

Read this awesome press release from the President of the American Sambo Association about the ASA competition team:

March 18, 2011, Holland - The American Sambo Association's competition team continues its international winning streak at the 21st Annual Dutch Open Sambo Championships (FIAS sanctioned).

As you may recall in 2010, Anthony Sansonetti (Team Renegade) brought home gold and silver medals along with Doug Fournet (LA Boxing Louisiana) who also brought home a gold for Team American Sambo from the British Open Sambo Championships.

This year at the Dutch Open, Team American Sambo consisted of 2008 world team member Reilly Bodycomb (RDojo), 2008 world team member Mike Ruesch (Zealous Nation MMA/Ultimate Sambo) as well as 2010 team members Sansonetti and Fournet.

The American Sambo Association is proud to announce that Team American Sambo will be returning home to the United States with 4 medals (3 gold and 1 silver).

Results:

Reilly Bodycomb, Gold, 68kg
Reilly had four wins on his way to the podium, winning with 2 ankle locks (one in 12 seconds), a flying armbar, and one win via points.

Mike Ruesch, Gold, 81kg
Mike had three victories on his way to gold, winning with 2 ankle locks and a kneebar.

Doug Fournet and Anthony Sansonetti both contested in the 100kg division, sweeping the top two spots. Doug and Anthony both had three wins on route to the podium before facing each other for gold and silver. Doug defeated his opponents via kneebar, technical victory (12-0) and points. Anthony had wins by reverse armlock, kneebar, and points. In the finals Doug defeated Anthony by a score of 4-0 for the gold.

By all accounts the Dutch open was a incredibly well organized and attended event with teams from Scottland, Germany, Holland, Lithuania, the United States, France, and more. The entire US Team received incredible hospitality from our Dutch hosts. We look forward to next years event!

Fedor Training for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament - SHOWTIME MMA

Fedor Emelianenko training at NY Combat SAMBO

In preparation for his upcoming fight against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva this Saturday, February 12th on Showtime, Fedor Emelianenko put in some hours of training at New York Combat SAMBO. What an honor! New York Combat Sambo is owned by Stephen Koepfer. Koepfer is the President of the American Sambo Association and the Sambo Instructor for ECS head coach, Grant Gilliam.

See this article for the full story.

In our opinion, Fedor is, without a doubt, one of the greatest fighters in MMA history. The small set back he had against Fabricio Werdum was minor and we believe he will come out with the win this Saturday. The ECS prediction: Fedor by KO in the first round.
